Application & Operation

Magnetic separators / magnetic filter automats are systems for separating ferromagnetic particles from liquid media.

Application areas

The main application areas are grinding, honing and lapping machines. It is often possible to integrate the magnetic separators directly into the machines.

Operating modes:

Decentralized media processing: To paper band filter, collection tank or tank
Full or partial flow: Flexible operating options
Small systems: With few liters per minute
Central systems: With several thousand liters per minute

Suitable media:

EmulsionsOilsCleaning solutions

Construction & Design

Main components:

Stable housing made of stainless steel (V2A or higher grade)
Magnetic roller with high-quality permanent magnets
Wear-resistant scraper blade made of V2A
Drive station
Optional with/without pre-filter

The magnetic roller is flow-optimized and ensures an excellent balance between separation performance and flow volume.

Operation & Influencing Factors

Process flow:

1
Contaminated medium is calmed (laminar) over the entire system width and fed to the pre-filter
2
Medium flows through the working gap of the magnetic separator
3
Ferromagnetic particles are attracted by the magnetic roller
4
"Layer formation" also enables separation of non-magnetic particles
5
Separated particles are pushed over the magnetic roller onto the scraper blade
6
Scraper blade is mounted ascending - liquid can flow back

Factors influencing separation performance:

Viscosity of the medium
Flow behavior: Laminar / Turbulent
Flow velocity
Shape and size of particles
Operating temperature

Magnetic Rollers & Special Applications

Various magnet types for different requirements and special cases.

Magnetic roller types

Hard ferrite (Standard)

Sufficient for most applications, very robust and durable.

Proven for coarser ferromagnetic particles
Cost-effective solution
High service life
High-Performance

Neodym (NdFeB) - Rare Earth

Significantly more powerful in terms of separation performance.

Remanence: approx. 12,000 Gauss
Main application areas:
• Media with increased viscosity
• Separation material with particle size ≤ 70 μm
• Demanding applications

Special case: Grinding wool

If grinding wool or chip bundles arise from grinding operations or other factors, this must be taken into account when designing the magnetic filter automat.

Special features:

Chip bundles have a relatively low Fe content in relation to the total volume
Use of a neodym magnetic roller highly recommended
Individual testing with sample material possible

Practical tips

Medium discharge

Cycling the magnetic roller is the most effective means of reducing medium discharge. Suitable intervals can be coordinated with you based on your application.

Adhesion on the scraper blade

If the separated particles tend to stick or adhere in connection with the medium and temperature, the scraper blade can also be executed with a steep decline (30°).
